In 1968 James Baldwin wrote a screenplay based on Malcolm X's autobiography, later published in 1973 as One Day, When I was Lost (Dial, 1973). There were plans for Billy Dee Williams to be the star, but the project failed. Warner Brothers subsequently released a film about Malcolm X in 1972.
