{{#Badges: CoalSwarm}} The Rawl Complex is owned by Massey Energy and includes two underground room and pillar mines and a preparation plant. Production from the mines is transported via truck to the preparation plant of the Stirrat Resource Group. The Rawl plant, which was idled in December 2006, has a throughput capacity of 1,450 tons per hour. Coal produced from the mines is now processed in the preparation plants of the Stirrat Resource Group or the Sidney Resource Group. Customers are served via the Norfolk Southern railway with unit trains of up to 150 railcars.[1]

Lawsuit

Since September 2004, approximately 710 local residents filed approximately 400 suits against Massey Energy and subsidiary Rawl Sales & Processing Co. in the Circuit Court of Mingo County, West Virginia, for property damage and personal injuries arising out from slurry injection and impoundment practices, contaminating their water wells. Residents seek injunctive relief and unquantified compensatory and punitive damages. In addition, many residents say their exposure to the contaminated well water caused neurological injury or physical injury, including cancers, kidney problems, and gall stones, and seek medical assistance and monitoring. Massey estimates that plaintiffs will claim up to $50 million in damages. Trial is scheduled to commence on October 20, 2009.[2]
