Disinformation

Revision as of 15:25, 8 November 2003 by 172.192.92.31 (deleted rambling inaccurate content / said same things accurately but with economy of language )

Groups often produce disinformation to influence opinions related to their interests.

Unlike misinformation, presented by an uninformed source, producers of disinformation intend to deceive their audience. Disinformation is wrong information, not all wrong information is disinformation. Wrong information might occur by accident, whereas disinformation is represented as being a true while the individual or organization presenting the disinformation understands that the informations is incorrect.

A group might plant disinformation in reports, in press releases, in public statements or in practically any other routine, occassional or unusual communique. Disinformation can also be leaked, or covertly released to a source who can be trusted to repeat the false information. Propagandists sometimes produce disinformation by altering or otherwise affecting independant sources of information not related to the propagandists' group, but which can influence views of the group.
