Taos, New Mexico is a town in New Mexico with a population of 5,062.[1]

The town has considered--and attempted--numerous options to deal with the Town of Taos Waste Treatment Plant's sewage sludge, including dumping in the Taos Regional Landfill[2], selling the sewage sludge as fertilizer "after adding nitrates, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid," until 2008 when the town's land-application permission expired, according to a January 2009 article in the Taos Daily Horse Fly[3], and drying and "composting" it with wood chips.[4]

In June 2010, Taos Waste Treatment Plant began mixing the sewage sludge waste with wood chips for "composting" into the misleading product often referred to by the PR euphemism "biosolids compost", but never made the sludge compost available for public use.[5]

Currently,  the town has discontinued its composting process, according to an April 19, 2011 Taos News article, and is considering "resuming hauling treated wastewater to Río Rancho (where sludge composting facility Sandoval Landfill is located, parenthetical and emphasis added) once it receives a new roll-off truck in four to five weeks," due to resident complaints about the odor of the open, outdoor tanks of sewage sludge.

The Taos News reported:

"Those who neighbor the composting facility have said the dust and smell from the compost piles affect their quality of life. As the weather warms up, the town — and The Taos News — are receiving increased complaints from those affected by the presence of the piles."
