Its core business is the mining of coking coal for export markets and thermal coal for New Zealand industrial customers. From 2005, the company’s plans for expansion led it to take on more and more debt, and by 2012, at a time of falling coal prices, it became apparent that it was getting into major financial difficulties. In 2015 Solid Energy was placed into voluntary administration, and its creditors agreed to an orderly sell-down of the company and its subsidiaries. By the end of 2016 Solid Energy had negotiated the sale of most of its assets.
