Mr. Califano is an adjunct professor of public health at Columbia University ’s Medical School and School of Public Health, and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. AS HEW Secretary, Califano was strongly supportive of public health policies to reduce tobacco use.
In 1979 speech before the Tobacco and Allied Industries Division of the American Jewish Committe, Horace Kornegay, President of the Tobacco Institute, called "anti smoking" the "new anti-semitism" and referred to Secretary Califano as "Ayatollah Califano," a reference to Secretary Califano's leadership in advancing policies to reduce smoking in the U.S. [http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/tid/qlp92f00]
Califano also spoke against the tobacco industry on ABC's "Day One" program. He testified before the Waxman subcommittee on 5/17/94. He was an adviser to President Lyndon B. Johnson (AP 5/17/94).
