Loet Velmans: Defense
Biography
Loet Velmans is a former chief executive officer of Hill & Knowlton (public relations firm for the Council for Tobacco Research), circa late 1960s? (WSJ 2/11/93). Former H&K chief Executive Loet Velmans says H&K quit the Council for Tobacco Research account in the late 1960s out of frustration that the industry "for legal reasons felt it couldn't admit to anything on tobacco and health because then it would be sued out of existence" (WSJ 2/11/93). He has been quoted in WSJ article regarding lawyer control and H&K's fear of lawsuits. (Source: Multi-State Deposition Team - Identified Individuals May 9, 1997)
