Scott Adams, creator of the satirical comic strip [http:.www.dilbert.com Dilbert] , coined the word '''confusopoly''' in his 1997 book The Dilbert Future (New York, HarperBusiness, p. 159 et seq.). He describes Adams defines a confusopoly as "a group of companies with similar products who intentionally confuse customers instead of competing on price"."
Examples of industries in which confusopolies exist (according to Adams) include telephone service, insurance, mortgage loans, banking, and financial services.
