==Background==
According to a Sudan National Electricity Corporation (NEC) Projects profile for 2005-2010 power plan for the country, NEC was planning a 500 MW Port Sudan Power Station. In December 2011, Harbin Electricity International of China and Sudan's Ministry of Electricity and Dams signed an MoU for a 2 × 300MW coal-fired power plant project in Sudan's Red Sea.<ref>[http://www.china-hei.com/en/news-1-view.php?id=1864 "HEI signed the Sudan Redsea 2 × 300MW coal-fired power plant project,"] HEI, 2012-1-18</ref>

However, as of 2014 there has been no news of further progress or permits issued, and the power station may have been cancelled.
