William S. Kalema, Chairman of the Board of the Uganda Investment Authority.

"Born in 1952, Dr. Kalema, is a respected leader of the Ugandan private sector. As Chairman of the UIA, he is a member of the Divestiture Reform and Implementation Committee (DRIC). He was instrumental in the formation of the Private Sector Foundation, an umbrella body of 42 business associations, and served as Executive Director for the first six months of the Foundation's existence. He is a Trustee and Chairman of the Board of the Uganda Gatsby Trust, a charitable institution that supports collaborative programs between the faculty of engineering at Makerere University and small and medium enterprises in Uganda.

"Since 1998, Dr. William Kalema has been Board Chairman of the Development Finance Company of Uganda and of its related financial institutions, including DFCU Bank, a commercial bank and DFCU Leasing, the leading leasing company in Uganda, and a mortgage company.

"As a businessman, he is Managing Director of Simba Blankets Ltd. and a Director of Multichoice Uganda Limited. He is a member of the Board of East African Breweries Ltd., voted three years running as the Most Respected Company in East Africa.

"Dr. Kalema was educated at King's College, Budo, in Uganda, and had his undergraduate education at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, England. He holds Master's and Bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. From 1984 - 1991 he worked in R & D and business development in several divisions of the Du Pont Company in Delaware, USA.

"As a consultant, Dr. Kalema has been the lead consultant on a number of assignments related to private sector development, capacity building, and institutional development." [1]
