The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is an agency within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an intergovernmental organisation of 28 industrialised countries.

The mission of the NEA is "to assist its member countries in maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for a safe, environmentally friendly and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."

"The NEA also provides authoritative assessments and forges common understandings on key issues, as input to government decisions on nuclear energy policy and to broader OECD policy analyses in areas such as energy and sustainable development," its website states. [1]

The NEA's current membership consists of 28 countries in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region, which account for approximately 85% of the world's installed nuclear capacity.

The NEA works closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna and with the European Commission in Brussels. The budget of the Secretariat, as of late 2007, is about 10.2 million Euros.[1]
