Free Speech Foundation
The connection between the Free Speech Foundation and James Guckert has received considerable attention on the Daily Kos dKosopedia article about Guckert, a.k.a. "Jeff Gannon".
However, what has not been mentioned thus far is the fact that, in Talon News' April 2004 application to the "Standing Committee of Correspondents, the press body that oversees the distribution of credentials on Capitol Hill," the Committee had requested information "about Mr. Guckert's role as executive director of the Free Speech Foundation in order to determine whether it would conflict with gallery rules regarding paid promotion, publicity, and advertising." According to its Donation Page, the Free Speech Foundation "is a nonprofit organization under Section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code. It relies on the private financial support of individuals, the general public, foundations, and corporations for its income. ... Because The Free Speech Foundation is an educational organization, contributions made to it are tax deductible."
The only working links on the organization's home page connect mostly to 2003 news items or deadend links. Among those is "20-Year-Old Website Owner Sued by Former Senator," an undated Talon News item, which reaches the Talon News' web site message "The file you are looking for cannot be found on the Talon News web site."
Listed under "Foundation Projects" are:
- Conservative Campus.org, a one-page deadend web page, with no further information provided.
- New Media Project.org, which is an inactive domain name/web page.
- Faithfully Speaking.org, a second inactive domain name/web page.
- Journalism Diversity Project.org, a third inactive domain name/web page.
