Biography

Dr. E. Cuyler Hammond was the director of statistical research at the American Cancer Society from 1952 to 1954. (E. Whelan 1984) In 1952, Dr. E. Cuyler Hammond and Daniel Horn of the American Cancer Society began a massive prospective study of 187,000 smokers and nonsmokers. The death rate from cancer for smokers was five times the rate for nonsmokers. (E. Whelan 1984)
