Commonly referred to as CanWest, the company is owned by the Asper Family of Winnipeg. Its current CEO, Leonard Asper, is the son of CanWest's founder, the late Izzy Asper. [1]

Controversy

CanWest has been criticized for exercising too much central control of editorial policy at its subsidiaries. In addition, in 2007 Can West engaged in corporate expansion that flouts Canada's foreign ownership limits. It bought the 13 cable channels of Alliance Atlantis, including Showcase and History Television, in partnership with New York investment bank Goldman Sachs. [1]
