AMVAC Chemical Corporation is a chemical company founded in 1945 that manufactures products including "plant growth regulators, botanical insecticides, insecticides, herbicides, corn soil insecticides, fungicides, molluscicides, public health insecticides, cotton defoliants, repellents, non-crop insecticides, soil fumigants, non-crop fungicides, and soil fumigants," according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek.[1] It is a subsidiary of American Vanguard Corporation, a publicly-traded (AVD:New York) international company headquartered in Newport Beach, California manufacturing products including "insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, molluscicides, growth regulators, and soil fumigants in liquid, powder, and granular forms."[2] Like its parent company, AMVAC's CEO and Chairman is Eric G. Wintemute.[3] The parent company American Vanguard had $366.2 in revenue in 2012.[4]

Funding for Front Group ACSH

AMVAC gave $5,000 to the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) in the second half of 2012, according to documents leaked to Mother Jones and published in October 2013.[5] Consumer advocate Ralph Nader once said called ACSH "a consumer front organization for its business backers. It has seized the language and style of the existing consumer organizations, but its real purpose, you might say, is to glove the hand that feeds it."[6]

EPA Issues a "Stop Sale, Use or Removal Order" on AMVAC Product

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Stop Sale, Use or Removal Order (SSURO) to American Vanguard Corporation (AMVAC) and AMVAC Chemical Corporation for potential violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) in August 2010. Laboratory analysis of AMVAC's registered pesticide product, Technical Grade PCNB 95% -- a pentachloronitrobenzene product primarily used as a fungicide on food crops as well as a seed treatment -- "revealed the presence of highly toxic impurities EPA considers to be of toxicological significance."[7]

Factoring in the fair market value of stock options granted, Wintermute received an additional $503,700.
