2,4-D ((2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid) is a phenoxyacetic herbicide. It is most famous for its use, together with the herbicide 2,4,5-T, in Agent Orange. It ranks among the top 25 herbicides for use in agriculture in the United States and it is "commonly used in nonagricultural settings for maintenance of roadsides, commercial areas, lawns, and gardens."[1] It has moderate acute toxicity and it is a possible carcinogen, potential groundwater contaminant, and a suspected endocrine disruptor.[2]

Pollution of Waterways
According to a 1999 U.S. Geological Survey publication, 2,4-D was among the top herbicides found in streams in urban areas.[3]
