Henry M. Paulson, Jr., of New York, was nominated May 30, 2006, by President George W. Bush to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Paulson's nomination was sent June 19, 2006, to the U.S. Senate and he was confirmed June 29, 2006. Paulson replaced John W. Snow, who resigned.
On July 13, 2006, President Bush nominated Paulson to be United States Governor of the International Monetary Fund for a term of five years; United States Governor of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for a term of five years; United States Governor of the Inter-American Development Bank for a term of five years; United States Governor of the African Development Bank for a term of five years; United States Governor of the Asian Development Bank; United States Governor of the African Development Fund; United States Governor of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, vice John W. Snow, resigned.

Prior to his nomination, Paulson served for the past eight years as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Goldman Sachs Group on Wall Street. Paulson also serves as Chairman of the Financial Services Forum. [1]
According to the May 30, 2006, White House nomination announcement, Paulson "grew up on a farm in Illinois. He went to college at Dartmouth. He starred on the field as an all-Ivy football player and in the classroom as a Phi Beta Kappa student. He earned an MBA from Harvard. He served in the Pentagon and here at the White House. He started at Goldman Sachs in 1974, and rose to its top office after 24 years of distinguished work at the firm. He has a lifelong passion for nature, and he's served as chairman of the Nature Conservancy, where he has promoted conservation both at home and abroad."
"Paulson joined Goldman Sachs in 1974 and became a partner eight years later. From 1983 until 1988, he directed Investment Banking Services for the Midwest Region and became Managing Partner of the Chicago Office in 1988. In 1990, he was named Co-Head of the company's Investment Banking Division and four years later became President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Paulson was named Co-Senior Partner in 1998 and became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1999.
