William A. Nierenberg

William Aaron Nierenberg (February 13, 1919 - September 10, 2000) , also known as Bill Nierenberg, was born on what was then part of the Lower East Side of New York.

Education

  • 1937-1938: undergraduate education at the Sorbonne in Paris
  • 1939: BS in physics, City College of New York
  • 1942: MA in physics, Columbia University
  • 1947: Ph.D. in physics, Columbia University.

Mr. Nierenberg was a member of the Board of Science Advisors at Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP). Despite his death in 2000, he is now (August 2005) still listed as member of that board where they write about him

"William A. Nierenberg, Ph.D. is director emeritus of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, Berkeley, and was science advisor to NATO and the U.S. State Department. He has been elected to both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, and chaired the first NAS study on the greenhouse effect and climate change. He serves on the advisory board of the Electric Power Research Institute. [1]

Like most board members at SEPP, Mr. Nierenberg also signed the Leipzig Declaration.

Nierenberg was also a member of the Board of Directors of the George C. Marshall Institute.
