The abbreviation for the United States Public Interest Research Group is USPIRG. USPIRG is a consumer group that says that tobacco interests have spent more than $7 million from January 1987 through July 1994 targeting key lawmakers to defeat attempts to ban smoking in public places and raise tobacco taxes (LAT 9/18/94). Ed Mierzwinski of USPIRG said, "Congress won't raise the tobacco tax or clean up our indoor air as long as it remains hooked on 'Camel Cash.' which may be just as hazardous to our health as cigarettes" (LAT 9/18/94).
