The U.S. Geological Survey is a U.S. government agency which states on its website that it "provides impartial information on the health of our ecosystems and environment, the natural hazards that threaten us, the natural resources we rely on, the impacts of climate and land-use change, and the core science systems that help us provide timely, relevant, and useable information."[1]

The USGS's Energy and Minerals, and Environmental Health "conducts research and assessments on the location, quantity, and quality of mineral and energy resources, including the economic and environmental effects of resource extraction and use".[2] The agency's Mineral Resources Program produces a series of profiles on the mining industry on a country by country basis.
