During the 2008 U.S. Presidential election season, Burnett, who has fashioned himself into an expert trend-watcher and youth culture, race, and race relations analyst, appeared on CNN's "American Morning" and "Campbell Brown: Election Center" shows to discuss and debate the impacts of race and ethnicity in politics.

Burnett has written more than 1,400 news and feature articles in his career that have appeared in newspapers including The Miami Herald, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, and the Montreal Gazette.

He has also been a staff writer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, has worked at the Financial Times of London, and has written for O: The Oprah Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, and Life & Style Weekly.


Burnett is a member, in good standing, of the National Association of Black Journalists, and has been nominated for regional and national journalism awards for articles and series he has written and co-authored on topics ranging from the psychological strain on firefighters in New York City, following the 9/11 terror attacks, to the state of public schools in urban communities on the 50th anniversary (2004) of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education.


James H. Burnett III is a native of Virginia, in the Southeastern United States. He has also lived on the Mediterranean island of Sicily, and has lived and worked in the colorful Sunny Brixton community of London, England, among other places.


Burnett was educated at Old Dominion University, in Norfolk, Va., where he studied Professional Communications (a combination of marketing, public relations, and journalism) in the University's Interdisciplinary Studies program.



Trivia

Burnett is a certified journeyman machinist, a title he earned as a college student, while working at the now defunct Naval Aviation Depot, a civilian facility tasked with repairing and modernizing U.S. Navy F-14 and A-6E fighter jets.

Burnett has competed in ameteur martial arts fights, and was formally trained in the Shotokan discipline of karate.
