Michael Dell founded Dell as PCs Ltd in 1984 when he was a student at Texas University. Dell began selling computers made from stock parts which were customizable (for that reason) according to customer orders. Dell grossed $73 million its first year and went public in 1988. Dell began selling laptops in the early 1990s and bought out Compaq in 1999.[1]

On checking the reference, it was to a website which in turn cited Wikipedia. On looking at the Wikipedia page, which is where the material has come from in a slightly different version, the key points are referenced. It would be better to have each of the main points better referenced or dropped if good sources can't be found. --Bob Burton 20:26, 8 July 2008 (EDT)
