Placement of cigarettes in movies "sheer fiction" This is a 2 page, confidential August 1989 letter from Brennan (now Dawson) Moran of the Tobacco Institute to the Managing Editor of the Christian Science Monitor in resonse to an article run on July 28, 1989 titled "Tobacco's Cloudy Image on the Silver Screen," in which cigarette manufacturers were accused of of engaging in "a deliberate corporate strategy" to use popular motion pictures as vehicles for advertising cigarettes.

Dawson says the accusations are "sheer fiction."
