Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission
The 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC Commission) was established by Congress "to ensure the integrity of the base closure and realignment process." [1]

Commissioners
On March 4, 2005, President George W. Bush nominated Anthony J. Principi, California, to be a Member of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (New Position). On April 1, 2005, Bush announced the recess appointment of Principi, as well as the recess appointments of eight individuals to serve as members of the Commission: [2][3][4]
- James H. Bilbray, Nevada; former Congressman, who was a member of the Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Intelligence Committees; served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1955 to 1963.
- Philip Coyle, California; Senior Advisor to the Center for Defense Information; served as Assistant Secretary of Defense and Director of Operational Test and Evaluation at the Department of Defense.
- Admiral Harold W. Gehman Jr. (USN, Ret), Virginia; Gehman served on active duty in the U.S. Navy for over 35 years; last assignment was as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic and as the Commander in Chief of the US Joint Forces Command.
- James V. Hansen, Utah; former Congressman, member of the Armed Services Committee; in the U.S. Navy 1951-1955.
- General James T. Hill, USA (Ret.), Florida; served in the U.S. Army for 36 years; last assignment was as Combatant Commander of the U.S. Southern Command.
- Samuel Knox Skinner, Illinois; served as Chief of Staff and as Secretary of Transportation for President George H. W. Bush; served in the U.S. Army Reserve 1960-1968.
- Brigadier General Sue Ellen Turner, USAF (Ret.), Texas; member of the American Battle Monuments Commission; served in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, most recently as the director of nursing services in the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General at Bolling Air Force Base.

Names Withdrawn
The nomination of Lieutenant General Claude M. Kicklighter, USA (Ret.), Georgia, was withdrawn April 4, 2005. He had served as Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning at the Department of Veterans Affairs; served in the U.S. Army for nearly 36 years. No reason was given by the White House.
